After Saturday's 5-4 shootout win over the Creighton Bluejays, Dordt hockey has now won 3 consecutive penalty shootouts and moves to 4-0 overall on the season.
How it happened:
The Defenders and Bluejays both brought more offense on Saturday than on Friday night. Dordt went up 2-1 in the first period on goals from
Jonah Weems and
Lucas Van Berkel. Creighton got one in the second period and was able to hold Dordt scoreless to tie the game at 2 a piece.
The action really got going in the third period. Dordt took a one goal lead on a goal from
Andrew Benson with about 11 minutes left in the period, but Creighton was able to respond quickly with a goal of their own, about a minute later.
With about 3 minutes to play,
Zach Espenson picked up the puck in the Defenders Zone and took it end to end for an unassisted goal that looked like it would put Dordt up for good.
Unfortunelty, a last second delay of game call against Dordt gave Creighton an opportunity. The officials put a couple seconds back on the clock, and that was all that Creighton would need to knot the game up a 4 and send it to overtime. After another a scoreless overtime period, Dordt and Creighton once again found themselves in a shootout. The Defenders scored twice in the shootout to win it 2-1 and the game 5-4.
Jonah Weems scored the game winner.
