The Dordt University women's cross country team claimed their second team championship in as many weeks as the Defenders win their home meet, the Holiday Inn Express Classic, held this morning on campus.
One week after dominating the competition and winning the Briar Cliff Invite, the Defender women repeated that outstanding performance on their home course to win with 49 points. Two additional GPAC teams followed in the standings, Concordia (80pts) in second place and Northwestern in third with 88 points.
Two Defenders,
Jessica Kampman and
Kristine Honomichl, recorded their second consecutive top 10 finish. Kampman, the reigning GPAC Women's Runner of the Week, completed the 5K course in second place with a time of 18:06. Honomichl was close behind in fourth place with a time of 18:16.
Dordt had three additional runners finish in the top 20, led by
Lucy Borkowski who finished the course in 12th place and a time of 18:53.
Molly Mulder continued her stellar freshman season by placing 16th overall with a time of 19:10 and
Taylor Anema finished just one place behind in 17th place with a time of 19:12.
Jessica Opfer (28th) and
Elyse Kuperus (29th) complete the Defenders top seven, both posting times of 19:35.
"The women raced very well today," said Dordt University Head Coach Nate Wolf. "Jessica and Kristine once again raced very strongly to lead the women's team. Lucy continued her excellent junior campaign filling the #3 spot for the women. Molly and Taylor ran a patient start and were aggressive over the course of the race to shore up the 4th and 5th spots on the team. The entire team raced incredibly well with many athletes racing to career-best performances. I look forward to a week off from racing to get back into our normal training routine."
Morgan Lawson from Grand View was the individual champion, completing the race in 18:02.
