Five Dordt University men's track and field athletes and one relay met the qualifying standard in the first meet of the indoor season, the SDSU Invite, held this evening in Brookings, S.D.
Payton Mauldin,
Cole Zevenbergen and
Joe Anderson all met the auto mark in their respective individual event while both
Davis Tebben and
Trey Engen met the provisional standard. The 4x400 relay was the final Defenders entry to qualify, meeting the auto mark in the final race of the night.
Mauldin dominated the field in winning the 800m, crossing the finish line nearly five seconds ahead of the second place runner and with a school and meet record time of 1:51.86. Mauldin's teammate,
Dayton Brunsting, placed seventh with a time of 1:59.
Anderson led a strong contingent of Defenders in the 3000m, winning the distance race with an 'A' standard time of 8:25.94. Engen and Tebben were close behind in third and fourth place, respectively, and met the provisional mark with times of 8:33 and 8:35.
Peter Shippy (7th - 8:38) and
Thaniel Schroeder (9th - 8:41) also placed in the top 10.
Zevenbergen met the auto mark in the 600m where the junior finished second overall with a time of 1:20.1, less than .5 second in back of the Reid Pierzinski (SDSU).
Peyton Miller also recorded a top 10 finish (8th - 1:24.5).
Mauldin, Miller and Zevenbergen then teamed with
Levi Schelhaas to win the 4x400 in thrilling fashion, crossing the finish line .04 seconds ahead of SDSU with an auto qualifying time of 3:17.32.
