Standards Met, Records Fall at SDSU

Payton Mauldin, Joe Anderson set records this weekend

It was a great day for the Dordt University men's track and field team as they qualified for nationals in seven events and set two school records at the Jim Emmerich Alumni Invite held today at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Center in Brookings, S.D. School records were established by Payton Mauldin (800m) and Joe Anderson (3000m) while Trey Engen came within a second of setting a record in the mile.

Mauldin broke his own record and met the NAIA 'A' standard once again in the 800m with an NAIA-leading time of 1:50.87. Not to be outdone, Anderson eclipsed the school record in the 3K by nearly seven seconds and easily met the 'A' standard. Engen used a strong final two laps to move from the middle of the pack to the front and qualify for nationals in the mile. Engen ran a personal best of 4:13.23, a time that puts him seventh in the NAIA and No.1 in the GPAC.

Both Davis Tebben and Peter Shippy met the 'A' standard and ran personal bests in the 3000m. Tebben finished just outside the top 10 in today's race (11th place) but finished with a personal-best time of 8;25.34 while easily meeting the auto mark. His time is the second fastest in program history and is currently the seventh fastest in the NAIA. Shippy closed his 3K with an incredible final two laps and finished with a personal-best time of 8:31.56, third fastest in the GPAC and the No.12 time in the NAIA.

Grant Brouwer met the provisional mark in the high jump once again, clearing 2.01m, fifth best in the GPAC.

The Defenders 4x400 relay team of Levi Schelhaas, Peyton Miller, Cole Zevenbergen and Mauldin met the 'A' standard for the second time and bettered their previous time by nearly two seconds. They recorded a time of 3:16.1, tops in the GPAC and third fastest in the NAIA.

Dordt University athletes recorded 12 top 10 finishes this weekend while an additional eight Defenders turned in a time / mark that puts them among the GPAC's top 10. Defender athletes accounted for 27 personal best marks / times at the two meets this weekend.
