Another record fell and four members of the Dordt University men's track and field team hit a qualifying mark at the SDSU Indoor Classic and Mount Marty Invite held this weekend in Brookings, S.D. and Yankton, S.D.
This was the final regular season meet and tune-up prior to the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Indoor Championship, which will be held on Friday and Saturday, Feb.10-11, in Seward, Neb.
In one of the final and also closest races of the day at the SDSU Indoor Classic,
Trey Engen set a school record and hit the 'A' standard in a competitive 1000m field. Engen finished third out of 33 runners with a time of 2:26.9, less than a half second out of first place (Colin Albert-Minnesota Distance E) and .26 seconds behind second place Yared Kidane (Iowa Central). Engen's time is the tops in the GPAC and ranks fourth in the NAIA; the senior has now qualified for nationals in four events (1000m, mile, 3000m and distance medley).
Joe Anderson hit the 'A' standard and qualified for nationals in the mile, the third different event the senior has qualified in during the indoor season. Anderson finished 17th out of 127 runners and was the top NAIA runner with a time of 4:13.68. Anderson's time today is the third fastest in program history, ranking behind his teammate,
Trey Engen, and his own time of 4:12.18 run last year. The senior ranks 17th in the NAIA.
Another Defender,
Payton Mauldin, met the 'A' standard and qualified for nationals in his third event of the indoor season on Saturday. Mauldin placed eighth in the 400m with a time of 48.09, currently the top time in the GPAC and the sixth fastest in the NAIA. The junior's time today is the second fastest in Dordt history.
Peyton Miller finished fifth overall and met the provisional mark in the 600m with a time of 1:21.45. Miller's time is seventh fastest in program history, fourth best in the GPAC and ranks 21st in the NAIA.
