The Dordt Hockey team played well on Friday night, but it wasn't quite enough to get past the #2 ranked Missouri State Bears. The Defenders lost 5-3 on a late goal, followed by an empty net goal as Dordt attempted to knot the game back up at 4. Dordt moves to 15-5-1 on the year.
How it Happened:
The game started out like a boxing match that lacks action early, the two opponents seemingly sizing one another up. Missouri State ended up scoring first, with just a few minutes left in the first period.
Isaac Baart responded quickly with a Dordt goal to open the second period, but the bears would come back with another of their own.
Alex Espenson would score the second Defender goal with six minutes in left in the second period, but the two teams continued to trade blows and the Defenders headed into the second intermission trailing 3-2.
It wasÂ
Baart again to open the third period with a Defender goal in less than a minute.
With both teams garnering opportunities on the offensive ends throughout the third, it took until there was just over three minutes left in the game for the Bears to take the lead for the final time. Missouri State would score one more time after that, after Dordt had opted to pull the goalie for an extra skater.
