Defenders Finish Weekend With Strong Performances

Trey Engen broke the school record in the mile

The No.7 Dordt University men's track and field team concluded an outstanding weekend with several top performances at two different meets, the Frank Sevigne Invite (Neb.) and the Dakota Wesleyan Invite (S.D.). For the second consecutive day, a Defender record fell as Trey Engen established a new top mark in today's mile at the Sevigne Invite. Engen finished third overall with a time of 4:09.49, breaking the old record set by his teammate, Joe Anderson, last year. Engen's time meets the auto qualifying mark for the NAIA Indoor Championships and ranks first in the GPAC, fourth in the NAIA.

Cole Zevenbergen hit the auto standard once again in the 600m with the second fastest time in the GPAC and ninth best in the NAIA to date, 1:20.1. Zevenbergen's time is the fifth fastest in program history.

Payton Mauldin met the auto standard in the 800m once again, finishing third overall in today's race with a time of 1:50.89, just off his school record and NAIA leading time of 1:50.87.

Both Zevenbergen and Mauldin, along with Peyton Miller and Levi Schelhaas, met the auto standard again in the 4x400 relay. They placed fifth with a time of 3:17.11.

Grant Brouwer posted top finishes in a pair of field events, placing seventh and meeting the provisional mark in the high jump and finishing fifth in the triple jump. Brouwer currently sits fifth in the GPAC in high jump and sixth in triple jump.

Three Defenders, Logan Franken, Sam May and Jacob Brouwer, won events at the Dakota Wesleyan Invite in Mitchell, S.D. Franken took first place in the 60m with a time of 7.06 and ran a personal-best 7.02 in the prelims, the second fastest time in Defender history. He is currently ninth in the GPAC in the event. May won the mile with a time of 4:31, just over a second faster than a Midland runner. Brouwer won the 3000m with a personal best time of 9:05.5, over eight seconds fastest than his previous best.

Dordt athletes totaled 16 top five performances and 27 in the top 10 between the two meets today.
