Four Defenders Claim Titles At Sioux City Relays

Peyton Miller hits the 'A' standard in the 400m hurdles

The Dordt University men's track and field team won four titles on day one of the Sioux City Relays held at Elwood-Olsen Stadium in Sioux City, Iowa. Day two has been canceled due to the predicted cold, wet weather.  Payton Mauldin and Peyton Miller claimed victories in their respective races while both Grant Brouwer and Micah Schaap won their respective field events to lead the Defenders.

Mauldin led from start to finish in taking home the title in the 800m with a time of 1:50.42, over three seconds faster than the second place runner (Colten Brand - Augustana). Mauldin's time once again hits the 'A' standard and ranks fourth on the all-time charts at Dordt.

Miller pulled away from the competition over the final 200m to earn a comfortable win and post a personal best time for the second consecutive week in the 400m hurdles. Miller hit the 'B' standard for the second time this season with a time of 53.81, less than a half second away from the school record and the 'A' standard.
Brouwer added another win to his career resume by taking first in the high jump. Brouwer outlasted Kaleb Scott (Dakota State) and was the lone jumper to clear 2.0m (6'6".75.

Returning to competition after taking last weekend off, Schaap claimed victory in today's triple jump with a leap of 13.52m (44-04.25), nearly a foot ahead of the second place jumper from Dakota Wesleyan. Schaap's winning jump came on his third and final attempt in the prelims.

15 Defenders finished among the top 10 in their respective event (11 running events, 4 field events). Logan Franken (100m / 200m) recorded a pair of top 10's today.

Final numbers from the weekend for the Defenders:
  • 2 national qualifiers
  • 15 top 10 finishes
  • 11 times / marks that rank in the Defenders all-time top 12 list
  • 10 personal bests
