It was a great day for the Dordt University men's track and field team as five Defender entries qualified for nationals, five Defenders won their respective event and a school record was established at "The Monday Meet", hosted by the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.
The Defenders took advantage of the last-minute addition to the schedule as well as the favorable conditions at the Lillibridge Track Complex. A total of 16 Defender entries finished among the top 10 in their respective event and 11 personal best times were achieved.
Peter Shippy and
Thaniel Schroeder started things off for the Defenders as the duo finished 1-2 in the steeplechase. Shippy, who already hit the 'A' standard, completed the 3K route with a personal-best time of 9:08.7, best in the GPAC and No.2 in the NAIA. Schroeder, who earlier this season hit the provisional mark, hit the 'A' standard and achieved a personal best time (9:13.07), currently No.2 in the GPAC and No.3 in the NAIA.
The Defenders 4x100 relay team of
Levi Schelhaas,
Logan Franken,
Ryan Schober and
Luke Wagner was next on the track and proceeded to set the school record and hit the 'A' standard with a winning time of 41.13. The time breaks the old record set in 2012 (Alex Henderson, Trevor Wolterstorff, Aaron Floen and Joe Lammers).Â
Trey Engen claimed first place in the 1500m with a personal best time of 3:56.05, just off the 'B' standard. Engen was one of five Dordt runners to place among the top 10 and run a personal best time in the race.
Payton Mauldin won the 400m with an 'A' standard time of 48.0, matching his personal best. Mauldin currently ranks No.2 in the GPACÂ and 14th in the NAIA.
Peyton Miller (1st) and
Devin Bos (6th) placed in the top 10 in the 400m hurdles. Miller hit the 'B' standard once again with a time of 54.04 while Bos turned in a time that is currently eighth in the GPAC.Â
Jacob Brouwer ran a personal best time (15:32) and finished sixth in the 5000m and all four members of the record-breaking 4x100 relay team recorded a top 10 finish in the 200m.
