The Dordt Defenders Hockey team played the Drake University Bulldogs to an impressive 8-1 win on Friday night.
Isaac Baart opened up the scoring in the first period with 15:49 to play and the Defenders didn't look back. Baart was assisted by Griffin Lennes and Ryler Schelle.
Andrew Benson put in the second goal of the game for the Defenders with 3:26 left to play in the first period, assisted by Nathan Lorenze and Noah Wilmes.
The Bulldogs were able to bring it within one on a goal scored with 14:35 left in the second period by Dylan Fischer. The Defenders were able to rally right back with 7:16 left in the period on a Ryler Schelle goal assisted by Griffin Lennes.Â
The Bulldogs found themselves in the penalty box with a minute left in the second period and Jonah Weems capitalized on the power play in the first minute of the third period, assisted by Lucas Van Berkel.
The Bulldogs found themselves with a power play of their own after a roughing call on Nathan Lorenze with 18:08 left in the third. However, Griffin Lennes was able to skate through traffic and score the short handed goal unassisted.Â
Mason Carrels also scored off of assists by Brady Espenson and Noah Wilmes with 12:24 left in the game to make the score 6-1.
Noah Wilmes followed that assist with a goal of his own with 9:37 left to play off of assists from Andrew Benson and Mason Carrels.
The Defenders capped off an incredible night with a goal from Tyson Wildeboer off of assists from Isaac Bedwell and Lucas Van Berkel with just under two minutes left in the game.

The Defenders will be back on the ice tomorrow, September 29th for their second game against Drake. Puck drop will be a 2:00 pm in the Vernon Ice Arena.
