The Dordt hockey team defeated the Kansas Jayhawks with a a 7-6 comeback victory on Friday night in the Vernon Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kansas got on the scoreboard first after a goal by Blake Hearn just four minutes into the game, Hearn was assisted by Caleb Dusseau. Dordt scored the equalizer five minutes later after
Brady Espenson got a pass near the blue line, fired a shot and was tipped in by
Isaac Baart for his first goal of the night. Dordt took the lead two minutes later after
Mason Spejcher put a shot in after
Zach Espenson put a shot wide of the net.
Kansas would tie it back up at two in the first period with five minutes left and would then go on to score three unanswered to take a 5-2 lead half way through the second period. After Kansas' fifth goal of the night,
Tyler Morgan made a switch at goalie. Isaac Van Noord came in for
Graeme Edmund.
Isaac Baart scored his second goal of the night and the third for Dordt to cut into the lead.
Zach Espenson gave a long pass to Baart that left him one-on-one with the goalie and he finished it on the forehand. Dordt would enter the second intermission trailing 5-3.
A few minutes into the final period,
Isaac Baart won a face off in their offensive zone that was gathered by
Luke Kester behind the goal. Kester found
Mason Spejcher at the top of the crease and he put it past the goalie to score his second of the night. Three minutes later, Dordt tied it up on a power play.
Noah Wilmes won the face off in their offensive zone that found
Mason Carrels near the crease. Carrels found
Lucas Van Berkel who put the puck under the goalie to score his first of the season.
Griffin Lennes scored on another power play. Lennes worked the puck through three Jayhawk defenders before dekeing the goalie and finishing on the backhand. Dordt scored an insurance goal and secured the win after
Zach Espenson scored on an empty net with just over a minute left to play. Nick Woolington would score for Kansas with 20 second left but were unable to tie it up before time expired.

Dordt's record is now 6-0-1 and will finish the series tomorrow afternoon against Kansas. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 pm.
