The Dordt Defender hockey team was a 7-2 winner over Illinois State on Friday night, October 10, in Sioux Center. The Defenders responded to an early Redbird goal and maintained a multi-goal cushion for much of the game to begin a five-game homestand and win their seventh in a row.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt got two Connor Perakslis goals at the 15:44 and 14:45 marks of the first period after Illinois State scored in the opening minute. A Mason Spejcher goal off a Zach Espenson assist with 10:38 left put Dordt up 3-1, and Espenson added a goal with just over two minutes left in the period to send Dordt to the intermission up 4-1.
Preston Waage scored a pair of goals off assists from Espenson in the second period to build the lead to 6-1, and the teams traded goals in the final period for Dordt's 7-2 win. Espenson finished the busy night with his second goal and had three assists in helping Dordt to a 7-1 season record.
