The Dordt Defenders needed a comeback to win their 19
th game in a row and finished the first semester of play with a 5-3 win over Kansas on the road Saturday afternoon in Overland Park. Kansas.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Jayhawks scored early with goals in the third and seventh minutes of the first period for a 2-0 lead that stood until
Zach Espenson scored with 4:29 left in the first period on an assist by
Rylan Veenstra and
Nick Espenson. The Defenders got the equalizer in the closing moments of the first period with
Mason Carrels scoring with the assist to
Levi Loken.
The score remained tied until the 17:29 mark of the second period when Kansas took a 3-2 lead.Â
Zach Espenson got the equalizer with a goal at the 11:11 mark on an assist from Veenstra.
The tie held into the third period and the contest appeared destined for a tie but
Levi Loken scored on an unassisted goal with 2:29 left in the game and
Tyler Welsh put up an insurance goal with 1:22 left in the game.
Tim Nanson played the final 50 minutes in goal and allowed a goal and faced 21 shots and had 20 saves. Dordt had a 39-30 shots advantage. Â
