The Dordt Defender hockey team's 19 game winning streak stopped on Friday night in a 6-2 loss at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Nebraska against the Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks.

The Defenders scored first with a
Reuben Horneman goal 4:06 into the first period on an assist by
Rylan Veenstra. The Mavericks' response came nearly 20 minutes later on a power play goal and the score remained tied until there was 5:47 left in the second period when
Tyler Welsh scored on an assist by
Andrew Benson.Â
Dordt carried the 2-1 lead into the third period before the hosts exploded for five goals. The game tying goal came on a power play 3:24 into the third and the hosts took the lead with a goal at the mid-point of the third period. Three more goals in the final eight minutes put the game out of reach.
Nebraska-Omaha is 22-3 while Dordt is now 19-2.
The two teams will play again Saturday night, January 17 at 6:30pm.
