Women's Hockey | Defenders To Offer Women's Hockey

(Monday, November 2; Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt University has announced the addition of women's hockey to its athletic offerings.

The Defenders plan to compete in American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 2, with a schedule of 12-16 competitions in 2027-28. Dordt anticipates an initial roster of 12-15 athletes, with plans to grow to approximately 25 in subsequent seasons.

"There is an opportunity to serve young women who want to continue playing competitive hockey while pursuing a Christian education. Few Christian colleges and universities offer women's hockey, and we hope to help fill that gap. Our desire is to provide an environment where student-athletes can grow in their faith, be shaped and formed through their Dordt experience, and pursue their academic and athletic goals," said Dordt Director of Athletics Dr. Darin Keizer.

Current men's hockey coach Tyler Morgan will serve as director of hockey operations for the women's program while continuing as head coach of the men's team. A search for a women's head coach will begin in January 2027, with Morgan overseeing scheduling and recruiting in the interim.

"We are excited about this new opportunity on our campus and in our community. Women's hockey is a rapidly growing sport right now, and providing our potential students with another avenue to get involved in our campus and work within a community they are comfortable with will be invaluable. This will help with the growth of women's hockey in our community and in surrounding areas by allowing younger generations with role models they can look up to and see attainable goals in their athletic journey," said Morgan.

ACHA Division 2 regional members include Iowa, Iowa State, Midland (Nebraska) and Augustana (South Dakota). Dordt hopes to schedule those programs, along with other opponents, during its inaugural 2027-28 season.

The addition of women's hockey brings Dordt's varsity athletic offerings to 23, complementing its nine junior varsity programs.
