The Dordt University hockey team controlled the game from start to finish Friday night, defeating Nebraska 9-2 in Lincoln.
The Defenders took command early, scoring three times in the opening period to take a 3-0 lead. Dordt continued its offensive pressure in the second period, adding four goals while Nebraska found the net once to make the score 7-1 heading into the second intermission.
Dordt added two more goals in the third period, while Nebraska scored once, giving the Defenders the 9-2 victory.
Rylan Veenstra opened the scoring for Dordt, with assists from
Tegan Doelman and
Zach Espenson. Veenstra scored again, with Doelman earning the assist.
Mason Carrels added Dordt's third goal of the night, assisted by Veenstra.
Mason Spejcher scored the fourth Dordt goal, with assists from
Reuben Horneman and
Riley Williams. Doelman scored Dordt's fifth goal, with Veenstra recording the assist.
Williams added Dordt's sixth goal, assisted by Spejcher, before Spejcher scored again to give the Defenders a 7-1 advantage.
Dordt added two more goals in the third period. Doelman scored his second goal of the night, followed by
Max Raiche to complete the Defenders' scoring at nine goals.
Dordt's offensive pressure was evident in the shot totals. The Defenders finished with a 57-21 advantage in shots on goal, including a 16-9 margin in the first period, a 19-7 edge in the second and a 22-5 advantage in the third.
Tim Nanson made 19 saves in goal for Dordt.
The Defenders had six different goal scorers, with Veenstra, Spejcher and Doelman each finding the net twice. Carrels, Williams and Raiche each added one goal.
The victory moves Dordt to 2-1 on the season, while Nebraska falls to 0-1.
