Defenders Edged By No.22 Hastings In Final Game Of Regular Season

Dordt is third in the GPAC with a 6-1-4 record

The Dordt University men's soccer team lost to 22nd-ranked Hastings 2-1 in the final match of the regular season for both teams played today on the Defenders home turf.

The loss snaps the Defenders 12-match unbeaten streak as they fall to 6-1-4 in the GPAC, 8-3-6 overall. The loss is the first for the Defenders since Sept.3 (vs Ottawa) and most likely will put them as the No.3 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Hastings already secured the No.1 seed and regular season title earlier this week and improves to 10-0-1 in the GPAC, 13-1-1 overall.

Javier Moscardo put the Defenders up 1-0 in the opening five minutes when he received a pass from Ryan Reyes, dribbled past a defender and beat Hastings goalie Brendan Dailey with a shot by the near-post.

Hastings tied the match 15-minutes later on a goal by Tyler Mase, assisted by Jackson Brown. Mase converted a penalty kick right before the first half ended which proved to be the game-winner as the Broncos went up 2-1.

By the Numbers...
  • shots on-goal favored Hastings by a slim 5-4 margin
  • Moscardo led the Defenders with two shots on net; both Phil Appelt and Blake Hansen totaled one shot on goal
  • Brandon Hansen collected three saves over the final 70+ minutes in goal for the Defenders
  • Brendan Daily (12-1-1) earned the win in goal and made three saves
