The Dordt Defender women's basketball team used a fast start and coasted past the Bellevue Bruins on Tuesday night, November 8 in Sioux Center, Iowa. Dordt had a double digit lead most of the first half and won by a 77-53 margin.
The Defenders used 10-12 shooting in the first quarter to take a 24-13 lead at the quarter break and then shutout the visitors for the first five minutes of the second quarter while building a 44-22 halftime lead. Dordt's defense was equally tight in the third quarter as the Defenders again outscored the visitors 24-9 in the period for a 68-31 lead. Up to that point the Defenders limited Bellevue to 2-17 three-point shooting.
The fourth quarter belonged to the Bruins as they outscored Dordt 22-9, but the damage had already been done with Dordt prevailing by the 24 point difference.
Karly Gustafson took the drama out of her quest for a thousand points early as well as she scored a basket with 2:15 gone in the game for her 1000
th and 1001
st points of her Dordt career. Gustafson is the 19
th women's basketball player to score one thousand points in a career.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt as 31-63 from the field for 49 percent and 8-21 from the three-point line.
- Bellevue converted 22-62 field goal shooting for 36 percent and 5-21 from the three-point line.
- Dordt had a 42-35 rebounding advantage and the Defenders committed 15 turnovers and forced 18.
- Bailey Beckman converted for 21 points and made 4-5 three-point shots.
- Gustafson scored 19 and Janie Schoonhoven had 10 points and seven rebounds.Â
- Faith Van Holland secured 10 rebounds and Macy Sievers had seven rebounds and four assists.
- Eliana Kuperus, Macey Nielson and Makenna Klecker all had six points.
