Emilee Heynen qualified for nationals in the 600m to highlight the performances turned in by a small contingent of Dordt University women's track and field athletes that competed at today's Concordia Early Bird meet in Seward, Neb.
Heynen, who met the 'B' standard last week at the SDSU Invite, bettered her time in today's meet to meet the automatic qualifying standard. The sophomore won today's race with a time of 1:37.29, which is the fastest time in the GPAC and ranks second in the NAIA.
Shelby Buwalda was close behind in fifth place and completed the race in 1:42.5, sixth fastest in the GPAC.
Ayda Den Herder competed in two sprint events, finishing sixth in the 200m (26.6) and 21st in the 60m prelims.
Buwalda was the lone Defender to compete in a field event, placing sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.63m, sixth best in the GPAC.
The Defenders will be off from competition until their home meet, the Dordt Open, on Jan. 14.
