Defenders Power Past Kansas Wesleyan

Dordt has not dropped a set in two matches

The Dordt University men's volleyball team powered past Kansas Wesleyan 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-18) in a conference match played tonight at the De Witt Gymnasium. 

The Defenders remain perfect on the season, improving to 2-0 in matches and 6-0 in sets played. 

Caleb Kulesza put away 13 kills and hit an impressive .435 over the three sets. Both Andres Guzman and Brady Frost totaled six kills and Lukas Van Groningen lofted up 31 assists. 

Set One:

With Dordt leading by two (15-13), the Defenders outscored Kansas Wesleyan 10-4 to close out the first set and win 25-17. Dordt hit a match-high 39% in the first set compared to 17% for the Coyotes

Set Two:

The Defenders used an early 8-1 run to break away and win the second set 25-13. Van Groningen and Diego Santiago both had long service runs and the Defenders controlled play at the net, limiting KWU to a negative kill efficiency.

Set Three:

Dordt fell behind early in the third before a 7-0 run put the hosts in front for good, fueled by the serving of Kulesza and the strong blocking of Nelson and Van Groningen.

By the Numbers...
  • Dordt hit 37% for the match compared to 4% by the Coyotes
  • the Defenders had the advantage in both aces (9-1) and blocks (8-4)
  • all five of the Defenders' starting hitters had at least five kills
  • four Dordt hitters had a kill efficiency over .400, led by Luke Nelson (.714)
  • Robert Piekarz led the backrow with eight digs and was perfect in serve receive (10-10)
  • Justin Burras led Kansas Wesleyan with six kills
