The No.5 Dordt University women's basketball team stays unbeaten with a 79-59 win over Hastings in a conference match-up played tonight at the De Witt Gymnasium.
Dordt improves its record to 9-0 in the GPAC, 15-0 overall; Hastings falls to 4-5 in the conference, 8-7 overall.
Leading by 12 (57-45) after three quarters, Dordt outscored the Broncos 22-15 during the final period to seal the victory. The Defenders began the final quarter with a 10-2 run, getting six points from
Janie Schoonhoven and two each from
Karly Gustafson and
Bailey Beckman. Minutes later, a three-pointer by
Macey Nielson and transition basket from
Macy Sievers gave the hosts a 72-48 lead and forced Hastings into a timeout. Defensively, Dordt held the Broncos to just one field goal over the first six-plus minutes of the final quarter.
All five Dordt starters scored in double figures, led by Schoonhoven and Gustafson with 13 points each.
Hayden Heimensen netted 12 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists while both Beckman and
Faith Van Holland contributed 11 points each. Both Schoonhoven and Gustafson matched Heimensen for game-high honors with seven boards and
Macy Sievers dished out five assists.

Another game, another fast start for the host Defenders as they scored the first six points of the game on baskets by Van Holland, Heimensen and Schoonhoven. Hastings came back strong, however, scoring 10 of the next 14 points points to tie the game at 10. The rest of the opening frame belonged to Dordt as they closed with a 12-4 run, finished off with a three-point by Gustafson as time expired to put her team in front 22-14.
Leading by 11 (31-20) in the second quarter, Beckman knocked down a long three-pointer to start a 13-4 run to give Dordt its largest lead of the half, 41-24, at the 2-minute mark. Hastings closed the gap to 43-29 by halftime.
A lay-up and three-pointer from Heimensen followed by a Schoonhoven jumper pushed the Dordt lead to 50-31 in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Hastings responded with its best run of the game, outscoring the Defenders 11-3, to cut the hosts lead to 11 (53-42) with 2:38 left in the third. Dordt was able to extend its lead to 57-44 by the end of the quarter, setting up the decisive final period for the Defenders.
