Macy Sievers netted a season-high 17 points to lead No.2 Dordt University to an 80-52 win over Mount Marty in the GPAC opener for both teams played this evening at the De Witt Gym.
Dordt remains unbeaten as they improve to 6-0 this season; the visiting Lancers drop to 2-3.
Sievers drained a career-high five three-pointers and also dished out eight assists to lead a balanced Defenders offense.
Hayden Heimensen contributed a season-high 14 points, making good on 4-of-6 three-point attempts. Three players,
Janie Schoonhoven, Karli Gustafson and
Gracie Schoonhoven, scored 10 points each and gave Dordt five players in double figures.
Leading by one (10-9), Dordt began a 14-0 run and outscored Mount Marty 17-1 over the final five minutes of the first quarter to take command with a 27-10 advantage. Three-point shooting keyed the decisive run as the Defenders made five three-pointers, two each by Sievers and Heimensen and one by
Macey Nielson. Sievers' second three-pointer came just before time expired to end the opening quarter.
Sievers Hits a Three-Pointer to End 1st Quarter
Dordt's defense continued to excel in the second quarter as they held the Lancers scoreless for a five minute stretch and led 40-16 following another Heimensen three-pointer with 2:27 left to go. The Defenders led 42-21 at intermission.
A three-pointer from Lancers' guard Sidney Thue cut the Dordt lead to 20 (44-24) on the first possession of the third quarter. The Defenders responded, however, with a 14-0 run that spanned over four minutes and extended the lead to 30+ for the rest of the game.
