Defenders Stay Unbeaten With Big Road Win Against Morningside

The No.2 Dordt University women's basketball team stayed unbeaten with a huge 90-52 road win over Morningside in a conference match-up played tonight at the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center / Allee Gym.  The second-ranked Defenders head into Thanksgiving break with a 3-0 record in the GPAC, 8-0 overall; Morningside drops to 1-2 in the GPAC, 4-3 overall. 

Bailey Beckman poured in a season-high 23 points to lead all scorers and was one of four Defenders in double figures. Macy Sievers scored 19 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists while Gracie Schoonhoven and Janie Schoonhoven contributed 14 and 12 points, respectively. 

Dordt raced out to a 10-0 lead, getting buckets by three different players, to force the host Mustangs into a pair of timeouts with just over three-minutes gone by in the first quarter. The teams played even for the rest of the period as a three-point play by Beckman put the Defenders in front 17-6 at the end of the quarter. 

A basket by Mustangs forward Chloe Lofstrom put the hosts within eight (17-9) but Dordt responded with a 13-5 run to take its largest lead to date (30-14) after a three-point play by Janie Schoonhoven. Still up by 16 later in the quarter, the Defenders pressure defense led to eight consecutive points scored by Macey Nielson and both Gracie and Janie Schoonhoven, and extended their advantage to 24 (44-20) with under a minute left. Dordt led 46-22 at intermission.

Dordt put the game away with a 12-0 run to start the third quarter as they held Morningside scoreless for nearly five minutes. Five different players scored for Head Coach Bill Harmsen's squad during the decisive run. The Defenders led 71-37 at the end of the third quarter and by as much as 44 after a lay-up by Macy Sievers early in the fourth.
