The Dordt Defender men's volleyball team swept Morningside in GPAC play on Thursday night 25-16, 25-16, 25-11 and dropped the Mustangs from the ranks of the unbeaten league play as the conference schedule approaches the midpoint.
Dordt pulled away early in all three sets to get the sweep and move to 3-1 in the league. In set one the Defenders trailed 5-3 when a
Brady Frost kill started a run of five points in a row and ended with a
Lukas Van Groningen kill for an 8-5 advantage. Morningside managed to tie the set at 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10. A 5-0 run by the Defenders followed and Dordt never led by less than four points the rest of the way in taking the 25-16 win.
Morningside grabbed an early 5-2 lead in set two but six points in a row by the Defenders put them up for good as
Caleb Kulesza and
Brady Frost had two kills each to start the run and Van Groningen ended it again with a kill. The lead quickly grew to 18-10 and Dordt was never challenged in set two as the Defenders won again by a 25-16 margin.
The outcome never seemed in doubt in set there as Dordt took a 6-2 lead in set three and became a 10 point lead at 18-8 before the Defenders won the match with a 25-11 victory which was capped by a
Ryan Dyck ace serve. Dordt ended the set with a 5-0 run.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was in control with a .347 kill efficiency with 38 kills, 12 errors and 75 total attacks.
- Morningside had 20 kills, 18 errors and 71 total attacks.
- Dordt had a 5-0 ace serves edge and took advantage of 12 Morningside service errors.
- The Defenders also scored eight points on blocks.
- Caleb Kulesza led the Defenders with 11 kills and Brady Frost and Andres Guzman each had seven kills.
- Luke Nelson accounted for six kills and had four block assists.
- Lukas Van Groningen put up 27 assists and Rob Piekarz got to 11 digs.
- Dordt is now 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the conference. Morningside is 3-1 in the league and 4-6 overall.
