The Dordt Defender baseball team split its games against Jamestown on Monday night, April 17 in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders secured a come-from-behind win in game one for a 4-3 decision and lost a 9-1 contest in the nightcap.
GAME 1
The Defenders allowed a pair of unearned runs in the first inning after getting on the board with
Logan Harris scoring on a wild pitch in the top of the inning. Dordt was the visitor as they were originally scheduled to face Jamestown in North Dakota.
The Jimmies added a run in the fifth on a double and the 3-1 lead held until the top of the seventh. In the seventh
Dylan Stanley was hit by a pitch and
Matt McMillian ran for him. After a strikeout,
Kaden Davis doubled.
Juan Sanchez then delivered a single that scored two.
Caleb Beard, running for Sanchez, advanced on a
Drew Oreskes single.
Ethan Hoogesteger hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Spronk to advance to third and moments later the Defenders got the eventual game-winner on a wild pitch.
THE NUMBERS
- Logan De Vries was 2-3 at the plate and was the only Defender with multiple hits.
- Sanchez had the two runs batted in.
- Gyeongju Kim was the winning pitcher with eight hits allowed and one earned run surrendered in seven innings of work. He also struck out 11. Kim is now 6-2 this season.
GAME 2
Dordt got a run in the first inning on a
Drew Oreskes fielder's choice but that was all the offense the Defenders would get as the Jimmies scored one in the second, two in the third and two in the fifth before building the final to 9-1 with four in the sixth.
THE NUMBERS
- Jamestown had a 13-4 hits advantage.
- Nolan Christianson, Ethan Hoogesteger, Logan De Vries and Drew Oreskes all had singles for the Defenders.
- Nick Yeager took the loss with four and two-third innings of work and struck out seven with four walks issued and he was charged with five runs, four of them earned. Yeager is now 4-5.
- Dordt is now 16-20 overall and 4-14 in the league while Jamestown is 18-16 and 7-9.
