Box Score The Dordt University men's soccer team won its match against Avila University (Mo.) 3-1 to get their first win of the 2023 season.
The Defenders are now 1-1 on the season after a good outing today against the Avila University Eagles.
"I was really proud of the work rate from our guys on short rest." Said Coach Eric Bourdo. " Still somethings to work on but we are excited to be able to take some lessons from this trip and continue growing into the season."
The Defenders took the lead just before halftime on a goal scored by Marco Laenen in the 44th minute. Robin Grewohl assisted with a lofted ball over the back line, hitting Laenen on a bounce and finishing it with his head over goalkeeper, Jonathan Fager.
The Defenders weren't done as Javier Moscardo scored in the 60th minute. Blake Hansen recieved the ball and was able to hit Moscardo on a through pass and he put the ball in the back of the net to go up 2-0.
Avila did attempt a comeback with a late goal by Ismaiel Cisse.
By the numbers:
- Defenders finished with nine shots, four of which were on goal
- Avila put up six shots, three of which were on frame
- Mitchell Dryden (1-0) came up two saves
- Eagles goalkeeper, Jonathan Fager tallied two saves
The Defenders (1-1) will have their home opener next Friday, September 1 where they will face off against Union College.
