FINAL
Dordt def. Doane 49-7
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender football team used a fast start and a 21 point 2
nd quarter springboard to a 49-7 road win over Doane to open the 2023 season.
Dordt started the scoring with a
Lucas Huttinga scoop and score on Doane's first play from scrimmage and the junior raced 15 yards for the touchdown. Four minutes later the Defenders capped a five play, 47 yard drive with a
Kolson Kruse pass to
Preston McCoy for a 14-0 lead. Dordt missed a chance to go up 21-0 on its next drive after
Eric Gustafson picked off a pass but a fumble at the Doane five allowed the hosts to dodge the miscue.
Doane's only score came on the ensuing drive when they drove 95 yards on 10 plays and covered the last 55 yards on a pass play for a 14-7 deficit. Dordt had an answer and used a 10 play, 86 yard drive to re-establish a 14 point lead with
Nick Wellen plowing in from one yard at the 14:34 mark of the second quarter and Cade Rowher hauled in a pass to end a 66 yard drive at the 7:03 mark has the junior made a one handed catch for an eventual 28-7 lead.
The Defender special teams got into the act with a blocked field goal and
Chip Kasay raced 60 yards to end the first half scoring with Dordt up 35-7. The Defenders effectively put the game out of reach on the first possession of the second half as they engineered an 85 yard drive that took 9:04 off the clock and took 17 plays to finish as
Eli Boldan caught a pass in the back of the end zone. The scoring ended at the 14:25 mark of the game when
Brendan Pieper went 17 yards for a score.
