Defenders Reach Century Mark In Road Win Against Lancers

The No. 1 Dordt University women's basketball team reached the century mark for its second consecutive game as they downed Mount Marty 100-64 in a conference match-up played tonight in Yankton, S.D. The Defenders extend their win streak to seven games and stay unbeaten in the conference at 14-0, 19-1 overall. Dordt swept the season series against Mount Marty, who drops to 1-14 in the league, 5-16 overall.

Gracie Schoonhoven led all players with a career-high 23 points to go with seven rebounds. The freshman made 9-of-10 field goat attempts and extended her streak to 15 consecutive games with 10+ points. Janie Schoonhoven was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field en route to a 15-point scoring effort and ended one rebound shy of another double-double.

Trading baskets with the Lancers early, Faith Van Holland put the Defenders in front for good with a three-pointer (7-6) which also initiated a 9-0 run that was finished off with a Gracie Schoonhoven lay-up for a 13-6 lead. Dordt pushed its advantage to 11 (29-18) by the end of the first quarter.

The host Lancers scored the opening basket of the second period to bring the lead back down to nine. Dordt responded, however, with a 15-1 run and opened up a commanding 44-21 lead after consecutive lay-ups by Janie Schoonhoven and Macy Sievers. The Defenders held Mount Marty without a field goal for over five minutes during the decisive run.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Bailey Beckman and Van Holland triggered another Defenders run as they pushed the lead to 28 (53-25) with 1:35 left in the half. Dordt led 53-28 at the break.

Dordt scored the first 10 points of the third quarter as four different players scored for the Defenders. Consecutive baskets by Beckman followed by transition baskets by Karly Gustafson, Janie Schoonhoven and Sievers pushed the lead to 63-28 and force Mount Marty into a timeout. Later, a Sievers steal and lay-up gave the Defenders a 41-point lead (76-35), their largest of the game, with 2:39 left in the third.
