HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender baseball team made an early lead stand up as it secured a second win this season in a 5-1 decision over William Penn.

A Nolan Christianson base hit started the scoring and Jason Carrig sacrificed Phoenix West in for a 2-0 lead after one inning.  Logan Harris added to the lead with a solo homerun in the fifth and a Carson Belcher single in the sixth inning put Dordt up 5-0 as two runs scored.

William Penn got a run back in the seventh but the Dordt lead was too much to overcome with Justin Bryson recording the final two outs in relief of winning pitcher Chaz Gothard.

THE NUMBERS
  • Gothard went six and a third on the mound and allowed six hits and one run with two strikeouts and four walks.
  • Bryson recorded the final two outs and had a strikeout and only faced two batters.
  • Dordt had an 8-6 hits advantage with two hits each from Nate Eliason and Nolan Christianson.
  • Harris's homerun was the only extra base hit for the Defenders.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defenders lost their second close game with the St. Mary Spires in as many days with a 4-2 loss in Leavenworth, Kansas.

Morgan Wilkins delivered a two run single that scored Logan De Vries and Dylan Stanley in the second inning but the lead was short lived as the hosts two back in the third inning with an error leaving the door open for an unearned run.

The score was tied until the fifth and a pair of run scoring singles staked the home team to a 4-2 lead and they held on as Dordt stranded a runner in both frames.

THE NUMBERS
  • Logan De Vries had Dordt's only multi-hit game with a single and double with a run scored.
  • Dordt's other two hits came from Morgan Wilkins and Nolan Christianson.
  • Bennett Spronk started and worked three and two-thirds and struck out three with one walk and one earned run allowed. Robert Doble took the loss and was charged with two unearned runs in two-thirds of an inning.
  • Julio Romero pitched the final inning and a third and didn't allow a base runner with two strikeouts.

Dordt will travel to face Benedictine in Atchison, Kansas on Friday and Saturday, February 23 and 24.
