DORDT VS SAINT AMBROSE
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt Defender volleyball team secured its first win of the season with a sweep if St. Ambrose on Saturday, February 10 in a morning match.
Dordt pulled away from a 14-14 tie with a service error and back to back kills by
Robert Piekarz and
Nicodemus Elliott. The lead grew to six at 23-17 after a
Cade Schmidt kill and the visitors got no closer than four the rest of the set before falling 25-20.
The Bees started set two with a 4-0 run but Dordt had an answer to take and 8-6 lead and they never trailed again, expanding the lead to nine at 24-15 before swapping points to finish. Dordt had a .583 kill efficiency in the set two win.
Dordt grabbed an early lead in set three, the first time they established an early lead in the match and had an answer for every St. Ambrose surge. Dordt was up by at least four from 12-8 on up to 22-18. The Bees did get within two but were stopped short at 23-21 as Dordt scored the final two points with a Schmidt kill and a
Ryan Dyck service ace.
THE NUMBERS
Dordt hit for a .341 kill efficiency with 39 kills while limiting St. Ambrose to a .241 kill efficiency and 34 kills.
DORDT VS GRAND VIEW
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Grand View Vikings used a strong attack at the net to secure a sweep win from the Dordt Defenders in the final match of a classic hosted by Dordt on February 9 and 10.
Dordt was battling from behind most the match with the Vikings hitting over .500 on kill efficiency. The Vikings pushed to a 16-12 set one lead but Dordt pushed back to within two on two occasions but got no closer in falling 25-18 as the nationally rated Vikings scored five of the last six points.
Set two saw the teams tied at 3-3 before a three-point run pushed it to 6-3 eventually the margin became 9-4 before a
Cade Schmidt kill ended it. The Vikings used another late run to go from up 17-12 to 22-12 before Schmidt again stopped the streak. Dordt couldn't maintain the run and lost by a 25-14 margin.
Set three was controlled by the Vikings and they led 23-17 before the Defenders ran off three in a row with a kill by
Nicodemus Elliott, a block by
Robert Piekarz and
Lance Vermeer and an Elliott ace but the Vikings got a kill to get to match point and one it one point later after a service error.
THE NUMBERS
- Grand View had a 46-27 kills advantage and maintained a .528-.200 kill efficiency advantage.
- Grand View had five aces and Dordt one. Dordt made nine service errors and Grand View had 16.
- Nicodemus Elliott had 15 kills and one ace.
- Cade Schmidt had seven kills.
- Lukas Van Groningen put up 23 assists and had seven digs.
