Defenders Fight Off Bulldogs

SCORE

Dordt def. Concordia 81-78

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Dordt Defender women's basketball team fought off a late rally by the Concordia Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center, Iowa to stay perfect in GPAC play with an 81-78 win.  It was the second time the two teams have played in the last two weeks and both weren't decided until the final moments.

The Bulldogs led much of the first quarter and managed as much as a five point lead in the first before a pair of Bailey Beckman free throws made the difference 22-21 at the end of the period.
After a Concordia basket to stake the Bulldogs to a 24-21 lead Dordt got back to back three-point baskets by Macey Nielson and Macy Sievers for a 27-24 lead. Dordt never trailed again and stretch the lead to 46-37 at halftime after Bailey Beckman made a three-point shot.

The momentum continued to build with Dordt getting up 59-42 after a Gracie Schoonhoven basket at the 4:29 mark and it was still a 17 point lead for Dordt at 61-44 after another Schoonhoven basket. Concordia proceeded to outscore Dordt 12-2 over the final 3:30 of the period had the lead trimmed to 63-56.

After Concordia cut into the lead the Defenders extended the lead back to 11 but the lead wasn't safe.  A Kendal Brigham basket at the 2:29 mark got Concordia to within 77-75 and neither team scored again until Sievers found Janie Schoonhoven for a 79-75 lead. A three-point play by Concordia made it 79-78 with less than :10 remaining. Dordt was fouled but missed free throws with :02 left. Janie Schoonhoven got an offensive rebound off the second miss and was fouled and she made both free throws for the 81-78 advantage. Concordia advanced the ball and had a shot to tie that was wide of the target.
