Box Score 2 The Dordt University baseball team dropped a pair of games played today (Friday, March 8) in Lakes Wales, Florida. The Defenders lost to Calumet St.Joseph (Indiana) in their first game 8-6 and followed with a 9-4 loss against No.8 University of Cumberlands (Ky.)Â Â
Dordt moved its overall record to 6-12 and is 2-4 on its spring break trip and will play another game against Calumet on Saturday morning, March 9, at 8am (CST).Â
Game One: 8-6 loss to Calumet St.Joseph (Ind.)
- Key Plays:
- Calumet opened up a 3-0 lead, pushing three runs across, all with two outs, in the top of the first inning
- Gio Pappas hit a two-run single and Nicholas Anderson added an RBI single
- the Defenders came back with a lone run in the bottom of the first when Phoenix West led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came around to score after a ground-out and passed ball
- the Crimson Wave came through with two more runs in the second and fourth innings and added one run in the fifth for an 8-1 lead
- Tyler Brody hit a two-run single in the second and both Tommy Benson and Josef Selby added RBI singles
- Dordt rallied to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut its deficit to 8-6
- De Vries hit a one-out single to send the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh; Calumet reliever Jorge Santos recorded the final two outs to end the game

- both teams accounted for nine hits
- Logan De Vries led the Defenders at the plate, going 3-for-4; Joseph Schlesselman added two hits
- Phoenix West extended his hit streak to six games, going 1-for-4 with two runs scored
- Bennett Spronk (0-3) took the loss, giving up seven hits, three earned runs in three innings
- Mike Bruell, Ty Neugebauer and Robert Doble all pitched a scoreless inning in relief
- Calumet was led by Pappas with two hits; Brennan Nichols (1-0) pitched the first 4.2 innings to secure the win
Game Two: 9-4Â loss to Cumberlands

- Dordt scored four runs in the top of the first inning, chasing Cumberlands starter Darian Fumero before recording an out
- Cumberlands came back with one run in the bottom of the first and two more in the second on a couple of solo home runs by Alec Gonzalez and Ben Snapp
- with the Defenders still up 4-3, Cumberlands took the lead for good with a 5-run, fourth inning
- Caden Petrey led off with a home run and both Snapp and Gonzalez drew walks to force Dordt starter, Chaz Gothard, out of the game
- a bases loaded walk to Christian Thompson gave the Patriots their first lead, 5-4
- Evan St.Claire added a 2-run single off Mike Bruell to give Cumberlands some insurance runs
- By the Numbers:
- Dordt totaled seven hits, led by Nolan Christianson who went 2-for-3 with an RBI
- West came through with a hit and scored a run, extending his hit streak to seven games
- Oreskes drove in two runs and went 1-for-3 with a walk
- Gothard (1-3) allowed six hits and six runs in the first three-plus innings to get the loss
