The Dordt women's basketball team defeated the Midland Warriors with an 82-48 decision in Fremont, Nebraska on Saturday afternoon. The Defenders remain unbeaten this season and improve to 19-0 overall and 13-0 in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Willow Bleeker opened the scoring with a three pointer on the first possession of the game but Ellie Bovaird scored on a layup to answer. Both teams played a close first quarter as the Defenders held on to a narrow 9-7 lead at the 6:53 mark after
Olivia Harazin scored. Midland's Erin Foxhall, answered with a layup of her own. Dordt finished the first quarter on a 12-7 run capped off by a
Gracie Schoonhoven layup. Dordt took a 21-14 lead into the second quarter.
The Defenders began to pull away as
Janie Van Donge hit a pair of free throws,
Olivia Harazin scored on a layup, and
Willow Bleeker hit her second three of the afternoon. Dordt held a steady lead for the rest of the of the quarter, outscoring Midland 16-8 capped off by a
Macy Sievers floater at the buzzer. Dordt entered the break with a 41-24 lead. Dordt held Midland to just 1-8 from the field but allowed them go 8-10 from the charity stripe in the second quarter.
Janie Van Donge scored back-to-back layups to start the third quarter. Dordt would slowly increase their lead and would go on a 10-0 run to end the third after
Willow Bleeker knocked in a three as time expired and the Defenders took a 66-34 lead.
Taylor Drent and
Gracie Schoonhoven opened up the fourth with a pair of layups. Neither team scored for the next two minutes until
Ellie Lems hit a free throw and
Kaylee Davis hit a jumper to make the score 73-36. The Defenders salted away the rest of the quarter to secure an 82-48 win.
The Defenders improved their record to 19-0 overall and 13-0 in conference play and remains a top the GPAC standings while Midland falls to 2-17 overall and 2-11 in conference play.
Dordt's next game will be on Wednesday, January 22 where they will face No. 5 Briar Cliff in the De Witt Gym. Tip off is scheduled for 6 pm.
