The Dordt Defender hockey team scored early and often on the way to a weekend sweep of Drury in ACHA play at Vernon Arena in Sioux Center. One night after needing a third-period comeback, the Defenders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening period and cruised to their 11th straight win, a 12-0 shutout.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Rylan Veenstra sparked Dordt's fast start with two goals in the final five minutes of the first period, capping a dominant opening frame that also featured goals from Isaac Baart and Tyler Welsh.
The Defenders kept the pressure on in the second, extending their lead to 9-0 behind two goals from Reuben Horneman and single tallies by Nick Espenson, Levi Loken, and Mason Carrells. Dordt scored three times in less than three minutes during the stretch and finished with a 68-18 shots-on-goal advantage.
Veenstra completed his hat trick midway through the third, Loken added his second goal of the night, and Tristan Schlechter closed the scoring in the final minutes to seal the win.
