The Dordt Defenders just fell short of a reverse sweep over the third ranked Vikings in the De Witt Gym on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Defender men's volleyball team struggled throughout the first two sets of the of the match as they were unable to stop the Grand View attack. Grand View hit .522 in set one and .440 in set two. Dordt dropped both sets 25-16 and 25-17, respectively.
After going down 2-0, the Defenders rallied back in set three and won 25-15. Dordt hit .429 with 12 kills on 21 total attacks with three errors while holding Grand View to .083 hitting with nine kills on 24 total attacks and seven errors. A 5-0 run late in the set gave Dordt a 20-10 lead capped off by a
Cade Schmidt kill.
Lance Vermeer ended the set on a kill to cut into Grand View's lead, 2-1.
After a commanding set three win, the Defenders found themselves trailing 6-2 early. After working their way back to a 15-11 deficit, two straight kills and a Viking attack error brought them within one. Andrew Guzman recorded one of his ten kills and
Cory Kuperus recorded one as well.
Kai Chapman put down his seventh kill of the set to tie it up at 22 and a Viking service error gave Dordt the lead. A
Cade Schmidt kill and
Kai Chapman ace gave Dordt a 29-27 win and forced a fifth set.
Grand View found themselves with a 3-1 lead early in the final set but a two
Cade Schmidt kills brought Dordt within one. The Defenders tied it up again at five after
Cade Schmidt put down another kill and aced his next serve.Three straight points gave Dordt an 8-6 lead but three points for Grand View gave them back the lead. After trading points, Grand View had an 18-17 lead and won the game with a Ryan Griffel kill.
Dordt is now 5-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Dordt wil travel to Lamoni, Iowa to face Graceland on February 18.
