Dordt opened the match with its strongest stretch, using a late 5-0 run to break a 20-20 tie in set one. Back-to-back service aces by
Joel Van Groningen and a pair of William Penn attack errors gave the Defenders separation, and a
Kai Chapman kill closed out the 25-21 win.
The momentum shifted quickly in set two as William Penn raced out to a 12-6 lead and never allowed Dordt closer than six points the rest of the frame. The visitors hit .591 in the second set and limited Dordt to five kills.
Set three featured eight ties early, and Dordt stayed within 14-12 after a block by
Cory Kuperus and
Nicodemus Elliott, but a 6-1 William Penn surge pushed the margin to 20-15 and the Statesmen carried that cushion to a 25-19 win.
Dordt battled in the fourth, tying the set at 15-15 on a
Joel Van Groningen kill, but William Penn answered with a 4-1 run and closed the match on a 6-3 stretch to secure the 25-21 decision.
Dordt will host Graceland on Tuesday, February 17 in its next Heart of America Athletic Conference play.Â
