Defenders Hit Qualifying Times in Three Events at Husker Invite

The Dordt University women's track and field team hit three qualifying times and turned in a first place finish at the Frank Sevigne Invite, a two-day meet held in Lincoln, Neb.

Notes:

  • Addy Crow was the first Dordt runner to hit a qualifying time as the sophomore placed 10th in a loaded field in the mile on Friday night
    • Crow, who already qualified for nationals in the event, was the top NAIA finisher and posted a career-best time of 5:01.71, improving on her qualifying time by a half second 
    • the sophomore's time ranks No.1 in the GPAC, No.4 all-time at Dordt and ninth in the NAIA
  • Shelby Buwalda bettered her time and hit the qualifying standard once again in the 800m
    • Buwalda ran a personal-best time of 2:16.01 and placed 13th overall in a competitive field that featured several NAIA D-I runners
    • the senior's time moved her up to 10th in the NAIA, No.2 in the GPAC and third best in program history
  • Buwalda anchored the Defenders 4x400 relay to the team's lone first place finish, winning the final event of the two-day meet
    • Buwalda, Anna Heynen, Kaitlyn Wercinsk and Ada Dekkers crossed the finish line in a season-best time of 3:52.45
    • the quarter ranks No.2 in the GPAC and sixth in the NAIA as they hit the 'B' standard once again
  • Dordt's distance crew showed out in Friday's 5000m race, putting five runners in the top 10
    • Jeni Burtis led the Defenders with a second place finish and a career-best time of 18:04, currently No.2 in the GPAC
      • Burtis' time is seventh fastest in program history
    • Jessica Opfer followed close behind Burtis, in third place, with a career-best time of 18:17
      • the senior has the No.3 time in the GPAC and 10th fastest all-time at Dordt
    • Hannah Thong ran a personal-best time and placed fourth (18:19)
    • Jada Koerner (5th) and Courtney Joiner (7th) also placed in the top 10
  • with her time in Friday's 400m, Ayda Den Herder moved into 10th place all-time at Dordt
    • Den Herder was the top Dordt runner with a time of 59.10

National Qualifiers:

  • Addy Crow - Mile - #9 in mile
  • Shelby Buwalda - 800m - #10 in NAIA; #2 in GPAC
  • 4x400 Relay - #6 in NAIA (Heynen, Wercinski, Dekkers, Buwalda)
