Travis, Thong Win Events on Day One of Sioux City Relays

The Dordt University women's track and field team won two events and set one school record on the first day of the Sioux City Relays held today at Olsen Stadium. 

Notes: 

  • Fran Travis turned in a banner day at the Relays, recording three top 10 finishes for the second consecutive meet (also at USD on Wednesday)
    • Travis saved her best performance for the final attempt in the last event  winning the discus with a school-record mark of 49.11m / 161-01, breaking the old record (156-05) held by Makenna Walhof
    • Travis' mark ranks No.2 in current NAIA performance list and hit the auto qualifying standard
    • Travis was the top Defender finisher in the shot put, placing fourth with a mark of 13.39m, 12th best in the NAIA; her mark ranks No.2 all-time at Dordt
    • the sophomore finished seventh in the hammer (50.08m)
  • the Defenders dominated the field in the day's final event, the 10,000m, led by the duo of Hannah Thong and Jeni Burtis
    • in a race not decided until the final steps, Thong outlasted her Defenders teammate to win the 10,000m with a personal-best time of 37:15.39, just ahead of Burtis, who also ran a personal-best time of 37:15.56
    • Thong's time ranks third fastest in program history; Burtis is now No.4 all-time in program history
    • Jessica Opfer and Courtney Joiner placed third and fourth, respectively, and also ran personal best times and times that rank in the all-time top 10
      • Opfer - #8 all-time: 37:38
      • Joiner - #10 all-time: 38:14
  • Makenna Walhof had a pair of top five finishes, placing third in the hammer and fourth in the discus
  • Kailee Altena had an outstanding race in the 200m, finishing second to an unattached runner (Sara Riefenrath) with a time of 25.12
  • Anna Heynen led a strong contingent of Defenders in the 400m
    • Heynen ran a personal-best time of 58.26 and placed third
    • Ayda Den Herder finished on the podium in fifth place (58.61)
    • Kayla Van Otterloo placed 10th and ran a personal-best time for the second consecutive meet
  • Kaitlyn Wercinski continued to excel in the 400m hurdles, placing third with a time of 1:03.68
  • Shelby Buwalda and Arielle DeYoung placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in a loaded 800m field
  • Joy Koole and Isabella Webb, both making their outdoor season debut, finished second and fourth in the 5000m
