Wercinski Hits Qualifying Mark, Defenders Win Two Events at Mid-Week Meet

The Dordt University women's track and field team competed at the USD Snooze Button Classic, a make-up meet hosted by the University of South Dakota and held at the Lillibridge Track Complex in Vermillion, S.D. 

Notes:

  • the meet was originally scheduled for Saturday, April 4 as the USD Early Bird but was called off due to the weather
  • Kaitlyn Wercinski qualified for the NAIA Outdoor National Championship with her time today in the 400m hurdles
    • Wercinski placed fifth overall with a personal-best time of 1:03.3, currently the 20th fastest in the NAIA
    • the sophomore's time ranks second fastest in program history, trailing only Anmarie Stuit (1:01.66 - 2019)
  • Shelby Buwalda was part of two winning entries for the Defenders, claiming the title in the 400m and anchoring the winning 4x400 relay
    • Buwalda finished the open 400m with a time of 56.93, just off the provisional qualifying time
  • Buwalda, Wercinski, Ada Dekkers and Ayda Den Herder took home the title in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:53.42
  • the Defenders had a strong showing in the 200m with three top 10 finishers, led by Anna Heynen in 3rd with a personal-best outdoor time
    • Kailee Altena (4th) and Den Herder (8th) were also in the top 10
  • Raegan Snieder, one of eight Dordt runners in the 1500m, placed sixth with a personal-best time of 4:55.97
  • Kadence Driesen turned in the best finish of her career with a runner-up showing in the 5000m
  • Fran Travis placed among the top six in a team-leading three events
    • the sophomore recorded third place finishes in both the discus and hammer
    • Travis's mark in the hammer was a personal-best and third best in program history
    • Travis also placed sixth in the shot put
  • Whitney Minderhoud ran a pair of personal best times in the hurdles
    • Minderhoud ran the eighth fastest time and placed just outside of the top 10 in the 400m hurdles
    • the junior was the top Dordt finisher with a personal-best time in the 100m hurdles
  • Ava Ingwersen and Morgan Groen paced the Defenders with a sixth and 10th place finishes and personal-bests in the javelin
  • a total of seven Defenders turned in times / marks that rank among the program's all-time top 10 list (all are listed below)
