The Dordt Defender men's golf team is second after the opening round of the Mount Marty Invitational played Monday, August 31, at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club in Yankton, South Dakota.

Dordt recorded a 298 and is five strokes behind Morningside B for first place. Concordia A is third with a 301, and Morningside C is fourth at 304. A total of 74 golfers recorded a score in the opening round.
Trey Van Groningen leads the Defenders after shooting a 39-33=72 and is tied for fourth. Van Groningen played the back nine at 3-under and had consecutive birdies on Nos. 17 and 18. He totaled four birdies during the round.
Samuel Wolfe carded a 38-35=73 and is tied for seventh. Wolfe birdied two holes on the back nine including the 18th.
Ian Grossman shot a 36-38=74 and is tied for 11th. Grossman played the front nine at even par and birdied Nos. 1, 6 and 12.
Leyton Roetman completed Dordt's team score with a 37-42=79 and is tied for 33rd. Roetman birdied the par-four ninth hole.
Caleb Douma shot a 42-39=81, which was not included in the team total.
Dordt's four counting scores totaled 150 on the front nine and 148 on the back. The Defenders recorded 10 birdies during the round.
Owen Bruins of Morningside and Calvin Zabloudil of Concordia share the individual lead after both shot 2-under 70. Morningside's Thomas Carroll is third with a 71.
Dordt's second team is 10th with a 319.
Joshua Toner led that group with a 37-41=78 and is tied for 28th. Toner birdied Nos. 3, 5 and 11.
Cade Van Groningen and
Evan Wood each shot an 80. Van Groningen birdied Nos. 4 and 14, while Wood birdied Nos. 5 and 9.
Deacon Branderhorst completed the second team's score with a 43-38=81. Branderhorst birdied three of four holes during the back nine.
David Chacon shot an 82, which was not included in the team total.
The second team's four counting scores totaled 161 on the front nine and 158 on the back. The group also recorded 10 birdies.
The final round will be played Tuesday, September 1, at Fox Run Golf Course.
