The Dordt University women's soccer team lost its second straight game, falling to Doane 6-4 in a high-scoring match played tonight in Crete, Neb.
The loss drops the Defenders record to 6-4-1 in the league, good for fifth place in the current GPAC standings with one match left to play in the regular season. They are 10-5-1 overall.
Karinna Tel netted her first career hat trick and accounted for seven points in the loss.
Avril Baccam scored a goal as well and both Tel and
Hayden Jennett recorded assists.
The Defenders offense started fast as they scored two in the opening 23 minutes of the first half. Tel netted the first goal from an assist by Jennett just four minutes in. The freshman added her second goal during the 23rd minute for a 2-0 lead.
Doane responded with three goals scored over the final 12 minutes of the first half to take a 3-2 lead into intermission. Jenna Tardiff, McKenna Rathbun and Lexi Torok all scored for the host Tigers during this time.
The Tigers lead was short lived, however, as Dordt tied the score with an early goal by Baccam off an assist from Tel just three minutes into the second half. Another goal by Tel, her third and final of the match, gave the Defenders the lead 4-3 a mere 73 seconds later.
Holding on to a one goal lead until the 73rd minute, the Defenders gave up three goals to the hosts over the next 10 minutes as Doane went on to secure the win.
