The Dordt Defender women's basketball team opened the 2022-23 campaign with a one-sided win over Presentation (South Dakota) on Thursday night, October 27 at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa. Dordt led 30-10 after one quarter and was never challenged in taking the 107-48 win.
Presentation scored first on a pair of free throws but a
Bailey Beckman jumper started the scoring for Dordt and an 8-0 run made it 15-4 near the midpoint of the first quarter. The Defenders also scored the final nine points of the period over a 3:29 span to take control of the game. Dordt's speed on offense gave the Saints trouble as the lead pushed to 60-27 at halftime with
Karly Gustafson beating the buzzer with a shot in the lane.
Dordt started the second half on an 11-0 run with points from
Eliana Kuperus,
Macy Sievers,
McKenna Klecker and
Hayden Heimensen to go up 71-27 and Sievers had a putback of a missed shot at the end of the period for an 87-38 lead. A
Maggie Walker three-point shot with 3:08 left in the game pushed the Defenders past the century mark and
McKenzie Goodwin ended the scoring with a steal and layup.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was 43-70 from the field for 61.4 percent success and 12-22 from the three-point line for 54.5 percent success.
- Dordt had a 48-20 rebounding advantage and limited Presentation to 18-53 shootin and 3-15 from the arc.
- Bailey Beckman had 19 points on 7-11 shooting and Hayden Heimensen had 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.
- Janie Schoonhoven added 12 points and seven rebounds while Karly Gustafson had 11 points and five assists.
- Macy Sievers and Eliana Kuperus each had nine points in their varsity debuts with Sievers handing out a team high six assists and she had five rebounds while Kuperus had four.
- 16 different players scored for Dordt.
