Gustafson's Double-Double Leads To Defenders Win

Dordt improved to 2-0 this season

A big scoring run in both the first and second quarter gave No.15 Dordt an 89-68 win over Dakota State in a game played tonight at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D. 

The Defenders improve to 2-0 on the young 2022-23 season while Dakota State drops its season opener. 

Karli Gustafson scored a game-high 23 points, 15 in the second half, and pulled down 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Bailey Beckman poured in 18 points and Janie Schoonhoven added 12 points and six rebounds go give the Defenders three players in double figures. 

Tied 8-8, Gustafson scored off a basket in the lane to begin an 11-2 run that put the Defenders in front 19-10. Faith Van Holland drained a three-pointer to push the lead to double-digits and Beckman closed the quarter with a jumper for a 28-15 lead. 

Dakota State scored the first two baskets of the second quarter but Dordt responded with a 14-0 run, beginning with a McKenna Klecker three-pointer and ending on a another basket by Gustafson, to put the Defenders in front 44-19. Dordt led 51-32 at the half.

The Defenders lead stayed around the 20-point margin for the entirety of the second half.

  • Dordt shot 46% for the game compared to 40% by DSU
  • the Defenders made 8-of-18 3pters (44%); DSU was limited to 22% (6/27)
  • Dordt outrebounded DSU 50-35, limiting the Trojans to eight offensive boards
