Defender Women Run Record To 9-0

The Dordt Defender women's basketball team ran its season opening winning streak to a program best nine games with a 79-42 win over the College of Saint Mary Flames on Wednesday night in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders trailed briefly in the first quarter before controlling the second and third quarters on the way to the lopsided win.

Dordt was down 9-5 with 3:33 left in the first quarter when Janie Schoonhoven scored on a layup and Faith Van Holland hit one of her two early three-point shots for a 10-9 lead.  Van Holland's second three-point shot made it an 8-0 run and Dordt led 15-11 at the end of the period on a Bailey Beckman jumper right before the buzzer.

The visitors stayed within striking distance at 19-16 with 7:46 left in the half but a Bailey Beckman three-point basket opened the floodgates and Dordt went on an eventual 12-1 run over the next four minutes for a 31-17 lead with 4:26 left in the half. It was 33-23 with 2:24 left in the quarter when Karly Gustafson started another run for the Defenders with a basket, igniting an 11-0 stretch to end the period and put Dordt up 44-23 at the intermission.

The Flames scored a basket to open the second half but Dordt held the Flames scoreless for over five minutes and built a 59-25 lead that eventually grew to 68-29 at the end of the third quarter. Dordt's lead was as many as 40 before settling for a 37 point final margin of victory.

THE NUMBERS

  • Karly Gustafson recorded a double-double with a 19 point, 10 rebound performance and she had four assists, a steal and a blocked shot.
  • Bailey Beckman scored 13 and Janie Schoonhoven had 10 points and six rebounds.
  • Macy Sievers and Macey Nielson each had nine points with Sievers recording nine assists, six rebounds and six steals.  Nielson was 3-3 from the three-point arc.
  • Dordt was 30-62 from the field and 9-18 from the arc while holding a 45-32 rebounding advantage.
  • Dordt limited the College of Saint Mary to 10 points less than their season average and 15-52 shooting for 29 percent success and 4-22 three-point accuracy for 18.2 percent.
  • Dordt is 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the league while the Flames are now 1-4 and 3-6.
