The Dordt Defender football team went on the road and came away with a 38-7 win over the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers in GPAC play Saturday afternoon in Mitchell, South Dakota.
A defensive touchdown got the Defenders on the board when
Lucas Huttinga got possession in the back of the end zone on a play that started at the 28 yard line. Austin Lee, Dakota Wesleyan's quarterback fumbled under pressure and the ball ended up getting batted into the end zone where Huttinga finally got control of it.
The defense then held and Wesleyan punted back to Dordt and the Defenders engineered a 59 yard drive on six plays that was capped by a
Kade McDaniel 11 yard touchdown run. Dordt added to the scoring with
Fulton Gunderson knocking a 39 yard field goal through with 9:53 left in the half for a 17-0 lead.
Wesleyan averted the shutout with a touchdown late in the half as the Tigers went from their own 17 yard line to score with two seconds remaining in the half on a third and goal play from the four.
The hosts were unable to carry the momentum into the second half as the Dordt defense forced a three and out and McDaniel completed a scoring strike to
Hayden Large for 29 yards to culminate a 61 yard drive on four plays. Dordt's defense forced another punting situation and this time Dakota Wesleyan's team was unable to execute a punt and Dordt got the ball at the Wesleyan 38.Â
Preston McCoy did the honors with his first career touchdown run for a 31-7 lead on the seven yard run.
Dordt's defense was challenged early in the fourth quarter when Wesleyan started at their own 29 yard line and worked to the Dordt five before turning it over on downs. A McDaniel 26 yard rush started the drive and he completed a pass to Jade Witte for 23 yards and Dordt's final score to cap the 95 yard drive.
