Avril Baccam's second half goal gave the Dordt University women's soccer team a 1-0 win over College of Saint Mary in a match played this afternoon in Omaha, Neb.
The Defenders earned their first win in conference play and improved to 1-1 in the GPAC, 4-3 overall. CSM dropped to 1-1 in the conference, 4-2-1 overall.
Scoreless at the half, the Defenders netted the only goal of the match during the 57th minute when Baccam received a pass from
Katherine Kooiman, used a pair of touches to get by her Defender and then blasted a left-footed shot past the CSM goalkeeper Alivia Schade.
Jenna Wright and Dordt's back four made sure the 1-0 lead held up as they kept the Flames from scoring in earning their first shutout of the season. Wright (2-3) made four saves.
"Our focus since Wednesday was on the things that we can control," said Dordt University Head Coach Alex Durbin. "Things like hard work, attitude and competing for the full 90 minutes. We did that today and it resulted in our first shutout and first conference win of the season. I am very proud of how we competed today."
