Katherine Kooiman scored a game-tying goal with just over a minute left as the Dordt University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against unbeaten Concordia in a conference match played tonight on the Defenders Soccer Field.
Dordt moves to 1-1-1 in conference play, 4-3-1 overall; Concordia is now 1-0-1 in the GPAC and 6-0-1 overall.
Trailing 1-0 with under two minutes left, Dordt moved the ball up the leftside of the field, all the way into the corner, where Concordia was forced to kick it over the end-line which led to a Defenders corner kick.
Karinna Tel then hit the left-footed corner kick into the box where the ball settled and Kooiman touched it past Concordia goalkeeper Kalie Ward to the equalizer. This was the first goal scored against Concordia in four games and broke the Bulldogs streak of 350+ minutes without giving up a goal.
Concordia broke through with a goal during the 30th minute when Ellie Eason scored off a blast from 20+ yards.
Both teams accounted for seven shots on-goal; the Defenders were led by
Avril Baccam with three and
Hayden Jennett,
Jori Bronner, Kooiman and Tel all had one shot each.
Elianna Van Hulzen made six saves and moved her record in goal to 2-0-1 this season.
Kalie Ward (4-0-1) stopped six Dordt shots on-goal for Concordia; Aliyah Aidama, Lina Kirst and Kierstynn Garner all recorded two shots on frame.
"Overall, I thought we played well; we transitioned fast which led to opportunities on offense, which we did not capitalize on early," commented Dordt Women's Soccer Coach Alex Durbin. "We fought hard for 90 minutes and it payed off in the 89th minute when Katherine finished a corner kick. Katherine played a phenomenal match on the defensive side of the ball, so it was good to see her get the tying goal."
