Sam Vogel scored his first career goal and
Mitchell Dryden made nine saves in leading Dordt University to a 1-0 road win against previously unbeaten Midland in a conference match played tonight in Fremont, Neb.
The Defenders are now unbeaten in their last five matches played (3-0-2) and improve to 2-0-1 in the GPAC, 4-2-3 overall. They are off to their best start since the 2011 season when they began the year with an 8-1 record.Â
Tonight was a solid team performance," said Dordt University Head Coach Ryan Gresse. "We defended well and were able to convert a scoring opportunity in transition. We are proud of the work the players put in this week and look forward to building on this as conference play continues."Â
Midand lost for the first time this season and drops to 1-1-1 in the conference, 5-1-2 overall.
After a scoreless first half, Vogel netted the game winner off a Defenders counter-attack during the 58th minute of the final half. Vogel actually began the counter when he stepped in front of a Midland pass and touched the ball to
Tyson Reitsma who was running down the right side. Reitsma pushed a pass ahead to
Blake Hansen who, after a couple of dribbles, laid off a pass back to Vogel who finessed a shot past Midland goalkeeper Marco Moresco.
Dryden and the rest of the Dordt defense made sure the one-goal lead held up as they kept Midland out of the net and earned their fourth shutout of the season. Dryden, who improved his record to 2-1-2, made nine saves and dropped his GPAC-leading goals against average to .4.
Midland had a 9-3 shots on-goal advantage, led by Alex Mee and Pietro Musso with two each. Moresco made two saves.
Nathan Wanninger had two shots on-goal and Vogel had one for the Defenders.
