Karinna Tel scored a pair of goals in leading the Dordt University women's soccer team to a 5-1 victory against Ottawa in the final match of the Pizza Ranch Classic played this evening on the Defenders home field.
The Defenders earned their third straight win and improved to 3-2 on the year as they head into the conference portion of their schedule. Ottawa fall to 0-3.
How It Happened:
- The Defenders scored the first goal with just 3:45 off the clock when Tel received a long pass from Avril Baccam and beat Ottawa goalkeeper Anna Tropansky 1v1
- Tel put her team up 2-0 during the 30th minute on another long ball, this time from Katherine Kooiman
- Ottawa had a quick response as the Braves scored its lone goal, by Jessenia Velez, on minute later
- Dordt added its third goal, perhaps one of the best of the season, when Ellie Stuart scored on a beautiful header from a cross hit by Karinna Tel
- Dordt need just 10 seconds in the second half to net its fourth goal as Kooiman found Baccam who touched it past the Ottawa goalkeeper on the opening kick
- Kooiman scored the Defenders final goal, off an assist from Tel, to make the score 5-1
By the Numbers:
- both teams totaled 16 shots; Dordt had a significant edge in the first half (13-4)
- Shots on-goal favored Ottawa, 11-10
- Tel scored a career-high six points; Kooiman tallied a season-high four points
- Tel and Baccam share team-high honors with five goals scored this season
- Jenna Wright made three saves and earned the win (1-2)
- Elianna Van Hulzen stopped six Ottawa shots in the final 23 minutes of play
Dordt will have over a week off from competition before they play their GPAC opener at home against Briar Cliff on Sept. 14.
