The Dordt Defenders used a stifling defense in the first half to build a substantial lead on the way to 90-43 win over the Midland Warriors in women's basketball on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Dordt used a 6-0 run to end the first quarter and then outscored the Warriors 22-1 in the second quarter for a 40-8 halftime lead.
The game was tied 5-5 early when
Hayden Heimensen made a shot in the lane to start a seven point run. A basket by Midland cut the gap to 12-7 but
McKenna Klecker's second three-point shot started the 6-0 run to end the period as
Bailey Beckman beat the buzzer with a three of her own.
Midland's only point the rest of the half came at the 6:39 mark as Midland went nearly 15 minutes without scoring a field goal. The Defenders closed the first half on a 16-0 run and went on to outscore Midland 30-9 in the third quarter.
Leading 70-17 after three periods, the Defenders put another 20 on the board in the final period to win their third in a row and 19
th in 20 starts.
THE NUMBERS
- Dordt was 34-58 from the field for 59 percent success and made 12-28 three-point shots and 10-12 free throws.
- Midland was limited to 15-59 field goal shooting for 25 percent success and 6-23 from the three-point line while making 7-10 free throws. The Warriors were held to 6-41 shooting in the first three quarters.
- Dordt had a 42-26 rebounding edge and forced 19 turnovers while giving up 15.
- Bailey Beckman scored 17 and had five made three-point shots and two steals.
- McKenna Klecker scored a career high 13 and Karly Gustafson had 10 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
- Janie Schoonhoven had nine points and 15 rebounds to go with three steals and Faith Van Holland added eight points.
- Macy Sievers had 12 assists and six rebounds.
- Six different Dordt players converted three-point shots and 13 out of the 14 players to see action scored.
- Dordt is now 19-1 overall and 13-1 in the league. Midland is 3-16 overall and 1-13 in the GPAC.
